Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JULY 1. The Pondicherry Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, has said the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has scheduled interviews on July 13 in New Delhi to appoint doctors in the staff-starved government hospitals in Pondicherry. Declaring open a child welfare centre of the Department of Labour at Madagadipet, Mr. Valsaraj said the hospitals were hard hit for want of adequate staff. Although the government had tried several strategies to manage the situation, there had been protests from some sections. Doctors from private medical colleges and hospitals were managing 18 primary health centres in the afternoons to provide medical care. But some people who had resorted to protests did not appreciate this arrangement. There was a practical difficulty for the Government in going ahead with the recruitment process without involving the UPSC. This had led to the delay in getting fresh medical staff. However, after his talks with the Chairman of the UPSC in Delhi recently, the commission agreed to hold interviews to post doctors in Pondicherry.
