Face-saving move

Sir, — The presence of more than 1,30,000 American forces in Iraq is a clear indication that America has not relinquished control. It has handed over power before time because of the increasing attacks by the resistance forces. It is a `face-saving' gimmick by George W. Bush, with the presidential elections round the corner.

M. Jagadish,
Bhadravati, Karnataka

Sir, — I refer to the article, "Bush and democracy" (July 1). Jonathan Freedland argues that the West should withdraw support to the offending regimes in the Middle East, and put them on notice if democracy is to flourish in the region.

But such isolation failed in the case of Iraq. Saddam Hussein successfully sold oil when the economic sanctions were in place while the common Iraqis suffered. But for the war, Saddam Hussein would still be prospering.

Asir Jebaraj,
Oklahoma City, U.S.

Sir, — It is for the people of the Middle East to decide when they want to overthrow their offending regimes. The U.S. should have nothing to do with it.

Bobby Francis Joseph,
Thiruvananthapuram
