Thallapaka to be put on tourism map

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 1. The State Government will take up a proposal to develop Thallapaka, the birthplace of saint-poet Annamayya, into a tourist centre at a cost of Rs. 2 crores, the Tourism Minister, J. Geeta Reddy, told the Assembly on Thursday. She said the Government was waiting for the TTD's reconstituted board to decide on the funds. The board is yet to meet, the Minister added.

Replying to a short-notice question tabled by K. Prabhavathamma and N. Varadarajulu Reddy (both Congress), she said that Cuddapah district Collector had already prepared the proposal. Temples in the village would be developed, a conference hall would be constructed, and the Annamayya dhyana mandir would be remodelled, she said.

The Minister added that infrastructure at Thallapaka needed to be upgraded for organising Annamayya festivals, on the lines of the Tyagaraya Aradhana in Tamil Nadu.

Prabhavatamma pleaded for construction of a six-km road, a library, an information centre and a Sudarshanam centre and also sought the posting of a music teacher at Thallapaka. Mr. Varadarajulu Reddy said the previous governments had given similar assurances, but failed to implement them. He wanted the Tourism Department to take up the work in a time-bound schedule.

The Technical Education Minister, Nayani Narasimha Reddy, informed V. Narender Reddy (Congress) that the State Government had not permitted the shifting of the engineering college from Mahaboobabad to Warangal.
