8th century terracota found in Pulwama district

SRINAGAR, JULY 1. In a major discovery the Department of Archaeology and Museums recovered terracotta objects and skulls dating back to the eighth century in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

On information provided by the locals, the terracotta objects and skulls were discovered from Lethpora village of Pampore, which was a city during the period of king Lalitadatiya, in April 2004, the Director Archaeology and Museums, Khursheed Ahmad Qadri, said today.

Giving the information to the Minister of State for Education, G.N. Lone, who also holds the charge of Archaeology and Museums Department during his visit to the area, Mr. Qadri said the department was still at work and expected some more discoveries during the excavations.

He expected that remnants of houses built in eighth century would also be discovered as the city was spread over hundreds of hectares of land from Galander to Lethpora, 30 km from here.
