Impetus to road connectivity in J&K

By Our Staff Reporter

JAMMU, JULY 1 . The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, has said that road connectivity in the State would be given impetus for opening the doors of progress to the people who are living below the poverty line.

Addressing a public meeting at Wadwan, Doda district, the Mufti said: "Some areas of the State, surrounded by high mountains, are virtually inaccessible with vehicular traffic unknown in the villages. Even in the 21st century, people have not seen a motorcar or a bus driving into the lush valleys here."

The Chief Minister announced that his Government would soon take up the construction of the long-pending roads to provide the much-needed communication link to local people.

The Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, assured that an airport would be constructed in the neighbouring Kishtwar area and asked the local people to spare land for it. Besides promoting tourism, the facility would also ensure economic development of the area. The air link would put Kishtwar and the entire Doda district on the tourism map of the country.

The Minister said that in the past when he held the portfolio of Civil Aviation, he had brought here a high level team to explore the construction of an airport but the local people were lukewarm to the proposal.

He hoped that they understood the significance and economic importance of an airlink.
