Jayalalithaa's gesture to best outgoing medical student

CHENNAI, JULY 1. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today greeted the `best outgoing student of the 1998-2004 batch' of the Chengalpattu Medical College, Sivakami, and expressed her wish that the latter emerge an outstanding doctor serving the public in the best possible way.

According to a release issued by the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam headquarters here, the party general secretary, Ms.Jayalalithaa released Rs.1.50 lakhs from the Puratchithalaivar Dr. M.G.R. Trust in 1998, to assist Sivakami, daughter of a hawker selling vegetable near the Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane, in her educational pursuit after scoring good marks in the Plus-Two examinations.

The amount was released from the Trust, as Ms. Jayalalithaa came to know that the student, owing to poor financial background of her family, was finding it difficult to continue her studies in the medical college, as she had to remit Rs. 40,000 towards college fee, Rs.75,000 for hostel fee and Rs.25,000 for purchase of books for five years, besides repaying the loan of Rs.8,000.

"Ms. Sivakami had become the best outgoing of the batch, apart from scoring first marks in many subjects, thanks to the encouragement provided by Ms.Jayalalithaa", the release said.

Ms. Sivakami called on Ms. Jayalalithaa and expressed her gratitude for the timely assistance, which had enabled her to become a doctor, it added.
