Pune season from July 15

PUNE, JULY 1. The preparations for the opening day of the Pune racing season (July 15) are in full swing here.

Horses which are likely to contest on the first day are being minutely trained on the well-laid sand track (training track). The early monsoon showers have helped a lot to grow the green turf on the race track and the members' and grandstands are getting a coat of paint.

The small owners in Western India were grumbling for quite a while for catering poor stakes-money to the lower class horses, due to financial constraints, by the authorities of Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC). Now, the RWITC has received on May 2, from the Pegasus Clubs and Resorts Private Limited Company, a sum of Rs. 10 crores as part payment of an interest free amount of Rs. 135 crores, as a security deposit in exchange of 25 acres, out of 226 acres of racecourse land for development. With this unexpected bonanza, the turf club will get a chance to boost its economy.

The grumbling small owners will now experience a `feel good' atmosphere from this season as the stakes for all the races in all classes have been substantially enhanced by the turf club, according to the prospectus issued for the season.
