CHENNAI, JULY 1. In a major operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation today arrested a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and a Life Insurance Corporation official in connection with the "multicrore fake stamp paper scam". The names of the arrested persons were given as A.P.Mohamed Ali, DIG, Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department, CB CID, Chennai; Shankar, a DSP, now serving as Assistant Commissioner, Anti-Dowry Cell here; and R.Sadhu, an LIC officer. The arrested will be produced before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore, to be remanded to custody. After the arrest, they were brought to the Government Royapettah Hospital for a medical examination. The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, CBI, Arunkumar, said the allegation against the police officers was that though they arrested some persons in connection with the scam, they did not take steps to curb the menace. The LIC official was allegedly a conduit in bulk purchase of stamp paper from a gang. Based on Supreme Court orders, the investigating agency was probing two cases relating to the scam in Tamil Nadu. He said incriminating documents were seized during today's searches. The operations began in the morning with the central unit swooping down on the residence of Mr.Mohamed Ali at Kilpauk and his office and Mr.Shankar's residence at Arumbakkam here. Simultaneous searches lasted till evening. The main door of the house of the DIG, located at Tower Block, Taylors Road, was closed when the central agency's operations were on. Later, the arrested persons were taken to `Malligai' on Greenways Road, office of the investigating team. As photographers and mediapersons gathered in front of the office, the gate was closed. After sometime, the DIG came to the gate and answered queries from reporters. Enquiries revealed that the CB CID arrested a city doctor a few months ago in connection with the Rs.30,000-crore scam. But no effective action was taken. Following the apex court's orders, the CBI took over the probe. The DSP also went to Delhi a few days ago in connection with the case.
