Karimnagar
KARIMNAGAR, JULY 1. Fresh row erupted between Karimnagar and Warangal districts over the sharing of drinking water from the Lower Manair Dam (LMD) reservoir in Karimnagar on Thursday. Cutting across party lines, Karimnagar municipal council members, including the chairman, staged a dharna near the sluice gates of the LMD reservoir on Thursday opposing the release of water to Warangal. It may be recalled that the State Government had issued orders for the release of water from the LMD reservoir to Warangal to meet the acute drinking water shortage there. The Karimnagar municipal council opposed the orders, stating that the existing water table was not sufficient to meet even the requirements of Karimnagar. The Karimnagar municipal chairman, V. Hanumanth Reddy said that water should be released to Warangal only after catering to the demands of Karimnagar. "The Government, which is so concerned about Warangal should also take into consideration the requirements of Karimnagar," he said. The water table in LMD reservoir is in a precarious level and motor pumps were being fixed to lift water up to the filtration beds, he added. He also threatened to intensify the agitation by mobilising the public to oppose release of water to Warangal. The TDP floor leader in the council, G. Kamalakar, said that people of Karimnagar town got only muddy water through taps as they were pumping water from the lowest level of the dam. Expressing concern over the reported proposals of the Government for the lifting of LMD waters to Jangaon town, he said it would adversely affect the people of Karimnagar.
