Partly cloudy

CHENNAI, JULY 1. The sky on Friday will be partly cloudy with the possibility of development of thunderclouds during evening or night. On Thursday, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 39.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 27 with a trace of rainfall. Meenambakkam recorded a maximum of 38.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26.5. It recorded a rainfall of 0.2 mm. Humidity was 57 and 44 per cent.

Pollution level

Tests on Chennai's ambient air quality at Adyar and Kilpauk by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board between 6 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday revealed that the measures of Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter at both locations were below the permissible limit, with the measure at Kilpauk nearing the limit of 100 micrograms per cubic metre. The measures of particulate matter were 48 and 207 micrograms per cubic metre at Adyar and Kilpauk respectively. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide content in the air at both stations were well below the permissible limit.

Japanese class

Jotsna Japanese Language School will hold classes twice a week for children between six and 12. The classes use the play-way method and begin next Wednesday. An orientation session for parents will be conducted at 4.30 p.m. on July 3. Contact 98400 38626 or email jotsna@eth.net.

Rotary project

Rotary Club of Chennai, Kilpauk, installed their new president for the year 2004-2005, Karthik Sabanayagam, recently. He said the club would spend over Rs. 15 lakh over the year on charitable projects to help physically challenged, destitutes and youth.

Screening

M.V. Diabetes Specialities Centre in Gopalapuram held free blood screening camps for people above 35 on Thursday at Marina Beach, Raghavendra Mutt, Woodlands Drive-in, Landmark in Spencer Plaza and Nageswara Park.

Notebooks

Lions Club of Madipakkam today distributed notebooks to more than 2,000 economically weak students of the Panchayat Primary School at Puzuthivakkam at a cost of Rs. 22,500.

Bank day

State Bank of India celebrated Bank Day on July 1 by sponsoring breakfast and lunch for more than 100 residents of Seva Chakra Orphanage in Choolai.

Donation

Commemorating Founders day on July 1, Karur Vysya Bank donated Rs. 25,000 to charitable institutions in the city, including Anjumam-e-Himayath-e-Islam, The Banyan, Little Flower Convent School for the Blind and Deaf, and Udavum Karangal.
