MADURAI, JULY 1. The Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association, affiliated to the All India Kisan Sangh, has urged the Madurai district administration to immediately release water from the Vaigai reservoir to facilitate agricultural operations. A delegation of farmers, led by the MP P. Mohan, called on the Collector, D. Raajendiran, on Wednesday and said water should be released from the Vaigai dam to irrigate 45,000 acres of land in the first crop period of the double crop area between Peranai and Kallandiri. Water could be released if the combined storage in the dam exceeded 4,000 mcft. But presently, the Periyar and Vaigai dams had a combined storage of 5,000 mcft. According to K. Devaraj, district secretary of the association, the Collector had assured to initiate measures to release the water.
