This Day That Age
"Though during the last 100 years great progress has been made in the railways in India, much more has still to be achieved to improve them to be on a par with some of the best railways in the West," said His Highness the Rajpramukh of Travancore-Cochin State, speaking at a function held in Trivandrum on July 1 in connection with the arrival of the Indian Railway Centenary Exhibition Train at the Trivandrum Central Station. There was a large and distinguished gathering, including Cabinet Ministers, leading officials and non-officials, Mayor of Trivandrum and the Raja of Ramnad, Minister for Public Works, Madras State. Mr. T.A. Joseph, General Manager, Southern Railway, welcoming the gathering, said that one of the greatest occasions in the history of Indian Railways was the celebration of the centenary on April 16, 1953. The exhibition had been designed to enlighten the public as to how the railways functioned, how much of the country's capital was invested in them and in what manner they assisted in the implementation of the First Five-Year Plan.
