Let CBI probe Sri Lakshmi murder, says CPI

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 2. The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Friday sought a CBI probe into the murder of the MCA student, Sri Lakshmi, by Manohar, stating, "The role of the police in the whole episode is to say the least, horrendous."

In a statement, the CPI State assistant secretary, K. Narayana, alleged that efforts were being made to "water down" the case against Manohar with the Vijayawada Police Commissioner uncritically accepting the claim of the accused that the murder was a result of group rivalry. This "concocted version" is just a ruse to save his neck from the noose, Dr. Narayana claimed.

The statement claimed that there was strong substance to the suspicion that there was a "big political hand" behind Manohar's "escapades".

Dr. Narayana questioned the role of the police in withdrawing the rowdy sheet opened against Manohar as well as ignoring the complaints of the victim, Sri Lakshmi. He alleged that Manohar had earlier killed his own sister but the police closed the case terming it suicide. He also questioned the manner in which Manohar managed to escape after the crime and the circumstances in which he surrendered to the Chennai police. The statement also decried the role of Sarada College, which did not respond to the victim's complaints.
