Ajit Bhavnani to head Strategic Forces Command
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
JULY 2.
The Government today named Ajit Bhavnani as the next chief of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), a tri-service agency managing and administering the country's nuclear systems. He takes the place of the first SFC chief, T. M. Asthana, who has since retired.
Although the National Democratic Alliance Government had chosen another Indian Air Force official to head the SFC, the new Government opted for Air Marshal Bhavnani, said sources.
The SFC nominally remained headless on Thursday after Air Marshal Asthana's retirement and the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet was still processing Air Marshal Bhavnani's appointment papers.
Air Marshal Bhavnani was the first Commander of the Mirage squadron and headed the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment.
