HASSAN, JULY 2. Over the past three days, former Prime Minister and Hassan MP, H.D. Deve Gowda, has toured the district and discussed the problems faced by the people. He has assured the people that he would take steps to solve their problems in phases. Participating in a felicitation in Sakleshpur town by the taluk unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), he assured the coffee growers, who are facing problems because of the plummeting price and fall in the yield, that he would soon find a solution to their problems. Addressing party workers, he said that farmers all over the country were in distress. It was the duty of the elected representatives to save the agrarian class from distress. The coffee industry, which was a major source of foreign exchange, was facing crisis, and both the State and Union governments should take steps to rescue the industry, he said. As the State was facing fiscal deficit, it was not in a position to pay salaries to its employees. The Finance Ministry was in the process of mobilising resources, he added. He said that the coalition Government would discuss the issue of waiving interest on loans taken by small and marginal growers from the banks. He said he would strive for the overall development of the district. In another function organized in Alur town to thank the electorate, Mr. Gowda said he would chalk out a programme to help improve the per capita income of the people in the district. Participating in another felicitation function organised by the Hassan district Chamber of Commerce and Industries, he said he would take steps to set up industries in the district by appealing to the industrialists. On a plea from the villagers of Salagame hobli, Mr. Gowda assured them that he would release Rs. 15 lakh from his Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme for the construction of a community centre. Mr. Gowda, who convened a meeting of district level officials in zilla panchayat, directed the authorities to prepare a blue print for the overall development of the district. He discussed the issue of forming a federation of growers on the lines of Milk Federation. The Special Economic Zone, which was coming up in Hassan, would be beneficial to the entrepreneurs, he said. Mr. Gowda felt that there was scope for floriculture and horticulture and that people had to make use of the opportunities. A.T. Ramaswamy, H.S. Prakash, and H.K. Kumaraswamy, all MLAs; S.M. Anand, MLC; Patel Shivaram, the vice-president of the Janata Dal (Secular) state unit; N.S. Manjunatha Datta, the general secretary; and R.P. Venkatesha Murthy, senior journalist, participated in the discussion. The Joint Director of Agriculture, Mahesh Gowda, presented a draft of the formation of federation of growers in the meeting.
