THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 2. The city police today questioned several persons, including the staff of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) Branch-II office at Ayurveda College junction, in connection with theft of Rs 7.14 lakhs from the cash counter of the office on Thursday morning. The police inference so far is that the nearly eight persons, possibly from outside the State, had been involved in the cleverly crafted operation. The police are trying to build a profile of the thieves by interviewing those who were present at the office on Thursday morning. "We know that the men were stocky and sported a hair-cut similar to that of police or military personnel," an official said. Eight persons kept the staff distracted by inquiring about insurance policies while one sneaked into the cash counter and decamped with iron cash box containing the money. The police suspect that after the theft, the group split into two teams and dispersed. The city police have also contacted their counterparts in other States and districts to find out whether a similar modus operandi has been reported anywhere in the country recently. The police are also checking the whereabouts of several "history sheeters' with a similar modus operandi who have been released recently from jails. A vigorous enquiry is also on to find out whether the theft was an `inside job'. The police are recording the statement of the LIC office staff for further verification.
