When the journey home is fraught with risks

PEOPLE WHO return home from work late at night are soft targets of armed robbers in Bangalore.

Employees of call centres, software companies and restaurants, and autorickshaw drivers are becoming increasingly vulnerable to attacks by robbers.

In the past month, three software engineers and two call-centre employees were attacked and robbed of cash, gold ornaments and mobile phones by armed robbers in the city.

Three men who came in an autorickshaw waylaid Padmaraj, a software engineer who was returning home from work, on Bull Temple Road, and robbed him of Rs. 5,000 in cash and a mobile phone at knifepoint on Tuesday night.

Sandeep Venkat and Anand Verma, employees of a call centre, were assaulted and Rs. 1,200 in cash and two wristwatches were taken from them by an armed gang in the Adugodi police station limits during the early hours on June 21.

A few days ago, in separate incidents, two software engineers, Nishanth Jain and Yash Talpad, both of Sudhamanagar, were attacked and robbed of cash and gold ornaments near Richmond Circle in the Ashoknagar police station limits.

On January 10, robbers stabbed Rajeev (47), an engineer in ISRO, and took from him Rs. 500 in cash and a wristwatch in the Koramangala police station limits when he was on his way home.

Armed men stabbed to death Shukra alias Rahul (18), a live-band singer and native of Kolkota, on Kanakadasa Road in Gandhinagar and robbed him of cash and a mobile phone on January 19.

Shukra was returning home around midnight when he was attacked. There have been many cases of hotel employees being waylaid and robbed of cash.

Incidents of robbers assaulting autorickshaws drivers who ply their vehicles at night have been reported from many parts of the city. In most cases, the robbers not only took cash and valuables but also made away with the vehicles.

Most call centres and software companies provide transport to their employees and ensure that they reach home safely. However, other business establishments do not provide the facility, and their employees are at risk of attacks by robbers.

The Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Alok Mohan, says robbers are not targeting any particular group of people but those who commute alone at night.

"The attacks on employees of software firms and call centres are stray incidents and there is no pattern," he says.

"We have intensified night patrolling and there is a decline in the number of robberies in the past month," he claims. The police cannot force business houses to change their working hours because of these incidents, Mr. Mohan says.
