Raman panel term extended
CHENNAI JULY 3. The State Government has extended the term of Justice A.Raman Commission of Inquiry by six more months. The panel is probing the arrest of the former Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, and two Central Ministers on June 30, 2001 in Chennai. The Government, in a notification issued yesterday, announced the extension of the panel appointed under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952. The terms and references of the commission were to probe if there was any police excess while effecting the arrest of Mr.Karunanidhi in connection with a case registered by the CB-CID in the alleged Rs.12 crore ``flyover scam'' and the arrest of the then Union Industries Minister, the late Murasoli Maran, and the then Minister for Forest and Environment, T.R.Baalu. It was stated then that the commission would give its report within three months.
Noon-meal workers demand
CHENNAI JULY 3. The Tamil Nadu Integrated Noon-Meal Employees Peravai today demanded that all organisers of the centres and anganwadis, who had completed 23 years of service, be absorbed as Government employees. A resolution to this effect was adopted at the State executive meeting held here yesterday. The activists of the outfit would observe a one-day fast here on August 13 in support of the demands. Retirement benefits such as pension, special provident fund and gratuity should be extended to noon-meal workers, it said. Employees who had passed the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination should be appointed as teachers after necessary training. The executive also highlighted demands such as creation of a separate directorate for the noon-meal department by integrating programmes implemented by different departments and enhancing infrastructure in the centres, a release said.
4 held, ration rice seized
SALEM JULY 3. The Salem Food Cell police today have arrested four persons including two employees of a fair price shop at Yercaud for attempting to transport rice meant for the food-for-work programme to an undisclosed destination. The police seized 233 bags of rice and two lorries. A team of police officials rushed to Yercaud and found two lorries being loaded with rice bags in front of the fair price shop. After an enquiry, the police arrested two employees along with the lorry drivers, Ravi and Shankar.
Passing-out parade
CHENNAI JULY 3. As many as 255 driver-trainees passed out of the Mechanical Transport Training Institute, Air Force Station, Avadi, today. The airmen who arrived here on completion of a 24-week joint basic phase training at the Administrative Training School, Belgaum, were imparted trade training for 26 weeks at the institute here. The Air Officer Commanding, Avadi Air Force 23 Equipment Depot, Sudip Mondal, took the salute and presented trophies to meritorious drivers at the culmination of an impressive parade. A. Singh, aircraftman, commanded the parade. He was also declared the best airman in general service training. S. Bhattacharjee, topped in trade and Gordhan Ram was declared the best all-rounder. The Institute Commanding Officer, C.M.Jaitly, said it was for the first time that seven trainees were directly awarded the rank of Leading Aircraftsman.
Employee associations' plea
CHENNAI JULY 3. The Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers-Employees Organisations and Government Employees Organisations (JACTTEO-GEO) today pleaded with leaders of political parties to support their demand for bringing forward necessary Constitutional amendments to confer the right to strike for Government employees. A JACTTEO-GEO release said here that functionaries of the umbrella organisations called on the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi; the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K.Vasan; the State Communist Party of India (Marxist) secretary, N.Varadarajan, and leaders of the Communist Party of India, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Pattali Makkal Katchi and appealed to them to raise the issue in Parliament. They also asked them to back their demand for trade union rights as prevailed in European countries and repeal of the service conduct rules for Government employees framed during the days of the British Rule, in toto. The leaders had assured the delegation that Members of Parliament belonging to their parties would support their demands, the release said.

SALEM JULY 3. The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Government College of Engineering organised one-day workshop on `Solid waste management and industrial pollution control'' here on Friday. The Principal, V. Palanisamy inaugurated the workshop and stressed the need for solid waste management, which was posing a major threat to civic bodies. Experts from respective fields delivered special addresses on solid waste management and industrial and air pollution.

Krishnagiri July 3. A 23-year-old woman was found hanging in her house at Krishnagiri on Friday. Police said Thangammal, wife of Ammasi, might have committed suicide due to some family dispute.

ERODE JULY 3. The Regional Transport Officer, Erode, collected a fine of Rs 2.42 lakhs from the Share Auto rickshaw drivers for carrying more than the prescribed level of six passengers. In a press release today, the Erode District Collector, D. Karthikeyan said that in Erode 50 share autos were being operated by some private persons with the permission of the government. Based on the complaint that the autos were not parked on the road margins, but stopped in the middle of the road and carrying more than ten persons, officials of the Regional Transport Office conducted raids.
Convict escapes from court hall
Tirunelveli July 3. The Palayamkottai police are on the lookout for a person who escaped from a court here on Friday after conviction in a criminal case. The police said G. Kandhan alias Viraal Kandhan of Velloor under the Srivaikundam police station limits in Tuticorin district was arrested by the Moontradaippu police in an attempt to murder case. When the Principal Additional Sessions Judge sentenced him to six years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.2,000 on him, he escaped from the court premises immediately before the court assistant, Petchimuthu, could hand him over to the police. Based on a complaint from Mr. Petchimuthu, the police are investigating.
Three injured
SRIVILLIPUTTUR JULY 3. Three passengers were seriously injured and over 10 sustained minor injuries when a mini-lorry hit a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus on the Srivilliputtur-Madurai highway today. The lorry suddenly came on the way of the bus coming from the opposite direction, when the lorry driver, Seruvar Muthu of Saminatham, tried to overtake a tractor, the police said.
Last date extended
MADURAI JULY 3. The last date for submission of scores for admission to MCA and MBA courses of the Madurai Kamaraj University for the year 2004-05 has been extended up to July 9. This is only for those candidates who have already applied to the university. The scores in TANCET or AIMCET or MAT should to be submitted before the due date, the Registrar, V. Alagappan, said in a press release here. Further details can be had from the MKU admission cell or by visiting www.mkuniversity.org.
IGNOU admission
The last date for admission to Bachelor Degree in Education (B.Ed) of the Indira Gandhi National Open University has been extended till July 9. Applications and information brochures can be had from the IGNOU sub-regional centre at the American College campus in Madurai.
Revolving fund for SHGs
KARUR JULY 3 . It has been planned to grant over Rs. 2 crores as revolving fund to 206 women self-help groups under Swarna Jayanthi Gram Swarozgar Yojana in the district, according to the Collector, G. Ramamoorthy. A total of 83 SHGs and 40 individuals would get loans in the current year, he said at a skill enhancement workshop for SHGs, organised by the Psycho Trust here, recently. Forty SHGs took part in the workshop.
Products worth Rs.12000 sold
Thanjavur July 3. Women self-help groups in Thanjavur district have sold Rs.12,000 worth products at the recently concluded Punnainallur Mariamman Temple kumbabhishekam, J. Radhakrishnan, Collector, said here today. In a release, the Collector said the SHGs put up an exhibition of their products at three stalls during the festival at Punnainallur.
Works inspected
Tiruvarur July 3 . The Tiruvarur Collector, P. Ekambaram, inspected development works going on in the Nannilam panchayat union on Friday. He saw the laying of tar road to a distance of 1.6 kms at a cost of Rs.8.41 lakhs at Keelakudi and the Nannilam-Mananthankudi road laid to a distance of three km at a cost of Rs. 15.81 lakhs. He also saw the sanitary complex constructed at Maharajapuram at a cost of Rs. 2.25 lakhs and construction of office building for the Village Administrative Officer at Peralam. The Collector also inspected whether egg was served in the noon meal at the primary school at Sukkiravarakattalai village.
Cotton gets good price
NAGAPATTINAM July 3. Cotton growers got good price in the Kuthalam regulated market, one of the four regulated markets in Nagapattinam district, last week. According to the Nagapattinam district marketing committee, farmers, who sold cotton in the Kuthalam market, fetched Rs.2,679 per quintal against Rs.2,639 sold in Sembanarkovil, Rs.2,579 in Sirkazhi and Rs.2,421 in Mayiladuturai regulated markets. The minimum price ranged between Rs.2,129 and Rs.2,014 per quintal in these markets.

Tiruchi July 3 . The level in the Mettur reservoir stood at 55.40 feet today. The inflow was 14038 cusecs and the discharge was 2000 cusecs.
