Alternative crops `not feasible'
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI,
JULY 3.
The Pattali Makkal Katchi founder, S. Ramadoss, today dubbed the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's suggestion on cultivating alternative crops in view of recurring drought in the State, an attempt to carry coal to Newcastle.
Referring to Ms. Jayalalithaa's statement yesterday that her Government was planning to promote less water-intensive crops such as sweet sorghum and jatropha to replace sugarcane, he said here that though she was making suggestions on the basis of the views of some agricultural scientists, the farming community, with adequate experience, had already attempted without success.
The Government, instead of attempting to provide relief and employment to farmers and agricultural workers, who were jobless, had come out with ``useless suggestions'', he said.
