ERODE, JULY 3. The Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, said today that the Centre approved the proposal to upgrade infrastructure in the auto cluster in Chennai at a cost of Rs. 45 crores. In addition, Rs. 35 crores would be given to the company formed by the industry association for infrastructure development. Mr. Elangovan said, after assuming office, this was the first sanction accorded to the company by the Ministry. He said the auto cluster covered industrial units involved in manufacturing auto components and services at Ambattur, Thirumudivakkam and Thirumazhisi in Chennai. The Centre's contribution to the project would be Rs. 35 crores for development of infrastructure, research and development, common facilities for testing, quality certification, benchmarking and marketing infrastructure. He said the development of the cluster would help to strengthen 50-km of road network, improve sewerage system, enhance global competitiveness of industries in the region and boost exports from Rs. 400 crores to more than Rs. 900 crores in two years. Besides, it would create employment opportunities to 2,000 more persons.
