CHENNAI, JULY 3. With just five days to go for the single-window counselling to begin for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2004, the final seat matrix is yet to be arrived at. Counselling was rescheduled for July 8 (originally set for July 5) following a Madras High Court order. Students and parents hope it will start at least on the rescheduled date. Even on Saturday evening, coordinators for the TNEA were receiving information from colleges on seats available in the single window pool. The All-India Council for Technical Education is sending information to the State Government on the approved seat strength in each college and branch. As on Saturday, about 41,000 seats were available in the single window pool, spread across four constituent units of Anna University, six government engineering colleges and three aided institutions, besides 225 unaided institutions. The figure might change depending upon the actual approvals given by the AICTE, say university officials. In some colleges, the AICTE has changed the sanctioned intake based on the availability of academic and infrastructure facilities. Two colleges much sought-after SSN College of Engineering, Kalavakkam, and Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi have surrendered to the single window pool 90 per cent of their sanctioned strength. Another reason for the change in seat matrix this year is the university's decision to stop admissions in seven colleges, citing deficiencies noted by inspection teams. In half a dozen colleges, this `stop-admission' measure applies to one or two courses. In Hindustan College of Engineering, Padur near here, the intake in all undergraduate and post graduate programmes has been reduced by 25 per cent, following a decision by the Syndicate. The TNEA coordinators today gave the latest figures of seats available in the single window pool : Electronics and Communication Engineering - 9,413 seats; Electrical and Electronics Engineering: 6,410; Computer Science and Engineering - 8,156; Mechanical - 4,386; Electronics and Instrumentation - 1,355; Industrial Biotechnology - 603; Information Technology - 5,854; Civil Engineering - 1,773; Chemical Engineering - 681; and Instrumentation and Control Engineering - 362.
