Around the City

Cloudy sky

The sky will be generally cloudy on Sunday with possibility of a shower or thundershower in some areas during evening or night. On Saturday, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 36.1 and a minimum of 25.9 degrees Celsius. Meenambakkam recorded a maximum of 36.2 and a minimum of 25.6 degrees Celsius. Rainfall of 16.6 mm was recorded. Humidity was 65 per cent and 83 per cent, respectively.

Power theft

The TNEB Chennai/Central squad of Chennai Enforcement Division detected a power theft by `reverse connection' in a commercial service at Padi during a check on June 30. The provisional assessment payable was estimated to be Rs. 1,30,317. Since the offender remitted Rs. 1 lakh, no police complaint was lodged.

Pollution levels

The level of particulate matter at traffic intersections in Vallalar Nagar was recorded to be 209 micrograms per cubic metre while in Anna Nagar, the level was 109 units, as per Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board's ambient air quality survey. The levels of respirable suspended particulate matter, below 10 microns size, was 106 units. The survey was conducted between Thursday and Friday mornings.

Yoga classes

Yoga Brotherhood, Gopalapuram, will conduct yoga classes from Sunday. For children, classes will be held only on Sundays. Contact: 2495 4089.

Clothes issued

Clothes and notebooks were distributed to students from Padur, Thaiyyur, Kelambakkam and Nemmeli villages in Kancheepuram at a programme organised by the Madras Coastal Round Table 162 and the NSS unit of Hindustan College of Arts and Science recently. A free medical camp was also conducted.

Guru Poornima

Guru Poornima was celebrated at Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, West Mambalam, in honour of Ved Vyasa. The puja marked the beginning of the new academic year. Astrologist S.A.P. Varadhan, chief guest, donated Rs. 1 lakh for economically weaker students.

Fresher's day

AVM Rajeswari - The School, Virugambakkam, celebrated fresher's day on Wednesday for new students coming into the school to bring out the latent talent of the children and get them accustomed to the school's atmosphere.
