More water for Vellore by August end

VELLORE, JULY 3. A Rs.19.22-crore water supply scheme for Vellore and Sathuvachari Municipalities and 12 wayside habitations is likely to be commissioned before August end. The scheme, officially titled the Integrated Drinking Water Supply Augmentation Scheme, should have been completed in June 2003 but was delayed due to delay in land acquisition for the expansion of the highway, NH-46.

The Vellore Collector, S. Gopalakrishnan, told a press conference here today that of the 23.99 km main pipelines to be laid for the project, 20 km had to be laid on the northern edge of the National Highway-46. Of this, work on 18.50 km has been completed; on the remaining 1.50 km the work was pending since buildings on the land were yet to be demolished. The revenue department was yet to take formal possession of these buildings, as there were procedural problems in acquiring the land.

The Collector said the district administration would talk to land owners and take possession of the land through negotiations or by acquisition if talks don't work.

At a meeting of the Special District Revenue Officer (Land Acquisition-NH-46 four-laning project) and the TWAD Board officials held recently, the Special DRO had been asked to allot the land before July end to enable the TWAD Board to start work.

The project would provide an extra 165.12 lakh litres per day (LLD). Of this, 113.80 LLD would go to Vellore municipality, 48 LLD to Sathuvachari municipality and 3.32 LLD to 12 wayside habitations— Nandiyalam, Then Nandiyalam and Nandiyalam Adi Dravida Colony (in Arcot panchayat union) and Perumugai, Indira Nagar, Pillaiarkuppam, Anna Nagar, Alamelurangapuram, Kollaimedu, Erikuthu, Paraimedu and Nadupparai (Vellore panchayat union).
