By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, JULY 3. A total of 2,37,524 applications for issue of new family cards were received in Vellore district during the month of June. The last date for receipt of new applications was over by June 30.

The Collector, S. Gopalakrishnan told newspersons here on Saturday that the applications for new cards which were received in the 2545 anganwadi centres had been registered at the revenue divisional offices through the anganwadi workers and despatched to various taluk supply officers. After field verification by revenue officials, the eligible applications would be forwarded to the office of the Commissioner of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, Chennai. The newly printed family cards were expected to be received from Chennai in the month of August when the applicants could obtain them on production of the acknowledgement slips at the fair price shops.

The `H' (honorary) stamp affixed on 66,756 family cards was cancelled from June 1 to 30 in the 1613 fair price shops in the district. A total of 71,333 family cards had been affixed the `H' stamp last year. The Collector said the remaining 4577 cards would be cancelled since they were not submitted for cancellation of the `H' stamp in time. Those card-holders who had the `H' stamp cancelled in their cards could receive from July 1 onwards the essential commodities which they were buying against the cards before the affixation of the `H' stamp. In view of the cancellation of the `H' stamp on 66,756 cards, an additional quantity of 6,93,218 kg of rice, 1,18,400 kg of sugar and 67,079 litres of kerosene would be required for distribution to card-holders every month.

The Collector said rice was being distributed in the fair price shops without coupons from July 1.
