Land acquisition for highway project to be over by November

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, JULY 3. Land acquisition in Vellore district for the four-laning project being undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway should be completed by November 30, the Collector, S. Gopalakrishnan, told newspersons here today.

In Vellore district, the project will cover 150 km from Perumbulipakkam in Arakkonam taluk to Velakkalnatham in Tirupattur taluk, necessitating the acquisition of land measuring 420.69 hectares in 81 villages spread over six taluks of Arakkonam, Walajapet, Arcot, Vellore, Vaniyambadi and Tirupattur. The required land comprised patta land measuring 338.38 hectares and poromboke land measuring 82.31 hectares. The land is being acquired from 7,368 pattadars (land owners).

On the NHAI's request for permission to demolish buildings lying on the `toe line' of the NH to widen the road, the district administration handed over to it the land on which the buildings stood, after paying Rs.27,19,46,579, amounting to 80 per cent of the compensation to 2,626 owners of 3,695 buildings comprising houses, shops and other utilities in 67 villages. The balance 20 per cent compensation would be paid after the award is passed.

As far as patta land is concerned, the final award was passed and the complete land cost paid to 1,251 pattadars in 21 out of 81 villages. The work on land acquisition and payment of compensation to remaining 6,117 pattadars in 60 villages would be completed and the remaining land handed over to the NHAI before November 30, the Collector said.

The four-laning of the NH-46 forms part of the Golden Quadrilateral Project being undertaken by the NHAI to link the metropolitan cities of Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata. The project, originally scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2003, has been extended up to November 30, 2004.
