Private water suppliers thrive in Harpanahalli

By Our Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE, JULY 3. There has been an acute shortage of drinking water over the past few months in Harpanahalli, and most people have resorted to buying water.

Harpanahalli and its surrounding areas have not received enough rainfall and as a result, the water table has gone down considerably. The borewells of the town municipality are the only source of drinking water there.

Many borewells, however, have dried up and the municipality is trying to manage with the little water that is available. The municipality releases water once a week or sometimes even once in 10 days.

Many entrepreneurs, who had introduced tankers to supply potable water in Davangere, have started their business at Harpanahalli. They supply water at the rate of Rs. 350 to Rs. 600 per tanker, depending on the demand.

The families at the police quarters have to pay Rs. 600 each every month to ensure that the tankers supply water three days a week.

People living near the hospital, Taluk Panchayat Circle and residential areas have now started buying water.

The town panchayat administrator claimed that water was supplied once in four days and said that he could not stop people from buying water from private tankers.

Many people blame the town panchayat for its lack of initiative to restore regular water supply.
