CPI(M) seeks specific steps

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, JULY 3. The Krishna district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxists) has asked the State Government to take specific steps to protect the interests of farmers in upland and delta areas of the district.

A delegation of the CPI (M) leaders led by the party's district secretary, V. Umamaheswara Rao, decided to submit a memorandum highlighting the problems faced by farmers to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who is scheduled to visit the district on Sunday in connection with the Rajiv Pallebata programme.

Informing this during a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Rao said that farmers in over 6.7 lakhs acres of land were facing difficulties for want of irrigation water. Unable to bear the pressure mounted by banks and private money lenders for repayment of loans, some of them committed suicide. In view of this, there was an urgent need for the Government to announce a one-year moratorium on recovery of loans by the banks as well as private money lenders while the loans obtained by farmers in the drought-affected areas should be waived.

The Government should initiate steps to provide new crop loans to enable farmers to take up their agricultural activity besides taking up construction of various irrigation schemes like Pulichintala and Tarakarama.
