SIRSI, JULY 3. "It is necessary to strengthen the Congress in Uttara Kannada district," R.V. Deshpande, MLA and former Minister, said at the first party workers' meeting held after the election at the Block Congress Office here on Friday. The meeting discussed the reasons for the failure of the Congress in the district. The party won only two of the six Assembly seats in the district. It also lost the Canara Lok Sabha seat. The Congress is proud of Sonia Gandhi, who sacrificed the post of Prime Minister, Mr. Deshpande said. He called upon the party workers to shed their differences and work together to strengthen the party. He said the party workers should accept the verdict given by the people in the district instead of confronting them. The voters should be taken into confidence by taking up development works, Mr. Deshpande said. P.S. Jaiwant, former Minister; and Shantaram Hegde, President of the Pradesh Congress Committee, spoke. D.G. Shetty, N.P. Gaonkar, Savitri Naik, Shashikala Naik, R.G. Bhat, and Tulsi Pawaskar, Congress leaders, were present on the occasion.
