No plea to remove Chaturvedi
GULBARGA July 3. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, said today that the State Government had not sought the removal of the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi. Referring to removal of four Governors those of Gujarat, Goa, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh Mr. Singh told The Hindu that they were removed because of their close connections with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and the State had not sought the removal of Mr. Chaturvedi.
Undertrial commits suicide
BIJAPUR JULY 3. Hanumantharay Biradar, an undertrial, reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the Central Jail here in the early hours of Saturday. Biradar, of Asgi village in Sindagi taluk, was an accused in a murder case and was lodged in the Central Jail since his arrest two months ago. He had been admitted to the Civil Hospital on June 28 and discharged two days later. His medical report was said to have revealed that he was HIV positive, and that was why he committed suicide, sources said. The Jail Superintendent, Raj Mohammad Yusuf, told The Hindu that four jail employees T.R. Lamani, A.R. Kavalagi, H.H. Lachyan and V.V. Lamani who were on night duty, had been suspended on the charges of dereliction of duty.
Team from Goa meets Sindhia
BANGALORE July 3. A delegation from the Goa Kannada Sangha today met the Industries Minister, P.G.R. Sindhia, and submitted a memorandum to him on the eviction of Kannadigas from the Baina Beach. Mr. Sindhia reportedly assured the delegation that the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, would look into the issues raised by them.
Expert to guide Revanna
Bangalore July 3. K.C. Reddy (in picture), former member of Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd. (KPCL) board and a technical expert, has been appointed advisor to the Minister for Public Works and Energy, H. D. Revanna. An official KPCL note said Mr. Reddy had served as Commissioner, Public Works Department, and "ably handled the power position during a critical period of shortages in 1983-88." After retirement, he served the State as the Chairman, Technical Advisory Committee on Irrigation Projects, and in various other positions. As advisor to the Minister, Mr. Reddy "will provide inputs in the areas of ensuring quality and equitable power supply to rural and urban areas at affordable rates... " the note added.
`Scrap new tax scheme'
BANALORE JULY 3. The Karnataka State Council of the Communist Party of India has urged the State Government not to extend the property-tax self-assessment scheme (SAS) to gram panchayats. The previous Krishna Government brought in an amendment to the Municipalities Act to introduce SAS. Under the new system, property owners in cities have been asked to file property-tax returns on the basis of the market value of properties published by sub-registrar offices. In many cities and towns, the citizens have strongly protested against the "imposition" of the new system because of the high property tax that will have to be paid under the new system, Siddanagouda Patil, CPI Secretary, says in a press note. In many towns, civil courts, and in some cases, the Karnataka High Court, have stayed the new system and directed taxpayers to pay tax under the old system. The CPI has urged the Government to replace the SAS with the old system.
CSRTI wins awards
Mysore July 3. The Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute (CSRTI) here has bagged national and international awards for carrying out path-breaking research and for the invention of "Sampoorna,'' according to a release. The research conducted under the CSRTI director, S.B. Dandin, has brought the institute the prestigious National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) award of the Union Government. An international award of the World Intellectual Property Organisation, which comprises a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a gold medal, has also been presented to the scientists of the CSRTI. The recipients of the award include Dr. Dandin, Kanika Trivedy, S. Nirmal Kumar, K. Sashidharan Nair, R.K. Datta, former Director, and P.K. Chinya, the release says. It says the award has been given in recognition of their invention of Sampoorna, an extraction of ecdysteroid from the caryophyllaceae family of plants, which facilitates uniform maturity of silkworms to produce good quality cocoons. The institute has bagged two other awards for developing high-yielding silkworm races and for developing high-yielding mulberry varieties for different agro-climatic conditions.
