All-India nine-ball tournament from tomorrow

MUMBAI, JULY 3. The first all-India nine-ball pool tournament will be held at the National Sports Club of India (NSCI) from July 5. Three-time amateur world billiards champion, Michael Ferreira described nine-ball pool as a fast, exciting and spectacular sport, which, hence, has the chance of getting into the Olympics.

"Nine-ball pool is popular all over the world and in recent times a few Indians with no formal training have scored impressive wins," said Ferreira.

The event, with a field of 128, will be organised by ZIPSPORT and played over four days. The prize money offered is Rs. 81,000, with the winner to receive Rs. 25,000. The Secretary of the Billiards and Snooker Association of Maharashtra, Derek Sippy, said two tables had been imported from Singapore for the event.

The event has attracted some of the top players, including Manan Chandra, Yasin Merchant, Mukesh Rehani, Alok Kumar, Rafat Habib, Ashok Shandilya and Devendra Joshi. Entries have been received from K. Ranjan (Chennai), Bhupinder Singh and Anuj Uppal (both Delhi) also.
