No irregularities in medical admissions: Minister

By Our Staff Reporter

PERAMBALUR, JULY 3. The Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram, who refuted allegations of irregularities in admissions to postgraduate medical courses, said there were neither discrepancies nor any irregularities in the selection process.

Addressing presspersons here today, he said the Directorate of Medical Education had all documents to prove that the admissions were in order.

The Minister said that vacant posts of medical officers in government hospitals would be filled soon by recruiting eligible candidates, who had registered their names on employment exchanges.

A total of 245 posts of doctors were lying vacant in government hospitals. A committee, led by the Collector concerned, and comprising officials from the Health Department, would recruit medical officers on a consolidated pay.

In addition to these vacancies, some doctors' long leave or unauthorised absence had left some posts `idle'. However, the posts could not be classified as `vacant' and hence no action could be initiated to fill up them.

A few doctors were now abroad. For instance, two doctors of the Ariyalur Government Hospital in Perambalur district were at present on long leave and one of them had been abstaining from duty for the past nine months.

He said he was now collecting data on such cases and would submit a report to the Chief Minister after reviewing all hospitals. A decision would be taken soon to solve the problem.

The Minister appealed to doctors and village health nurses to ensure proper attendance on duty hours at the government hospitals and health care centres.

Pointing out that only weaker sections relied on the government hospitals, he appealed to the doctors and village health nurses to be present at the hospitals and health care centres during duty hours.

He was conducting review meetings to streamline health delivery system by ensuring attendance to the medical and paramedical personnel.

Mr. Thalavai Sundaram said the State Government had complied with the norms stipulated by the Medical Council of India for getting recognition for the Tuticorin and Nagercoil Government Medical Colleges and expressed confidence that the colleges would be able to admit students before September 30.
