Government urged to prevent suicides

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam district unit of Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC) has appealed to the Government to take immediate steps to prevent suicide by farmers and starvation deaths in the State.

In a statement here on Saturday, president of the unit, T. Sreerama Murthy, said as many as 379 farmers committed suicide during the past 48 days in 22 districts in the State. There were 2,000 farmers waiting at the Helpline for assistance, but the Government had failed to prevent suicides, he alleged.

``Besides, there are reports of starvation deaths in Telangana region. Many people are migrating due to starvation. A legislative committee should be constituted and it should tour the entire State to help the farmers looking for assistance,'' he said.

Press academy to be revamped

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Saturday said the Press Academy of Andhra Pradesh (PAAP) would be reconstituted. He was speaking after releasing a book, `Andhra Patrika Charitra', written by its former editor, C.V. Rajagopala Rao.

While the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, released a Media Directory, the first of a bi-ennial compilation by the PAAP, the Information Minister, Mohd. Ali Shabbir, released a book titled, `Telugu Patrika Bhasha - Konni Soochanalu', writted by Nanduri Ramamohana Rao.

The PAAP Chairman, I. Venkata Rao, sought a grant of Rs. 50 lakhs as the academy had not received any grant, apart from Rs. 11 lakhs, towards salaries. Dr. Reddy considered release of at least Rs. 25 lakhs.

Manohar to be in police custody for three days

VIJAYAWADA: The Third Metropolitan Magistrate, G. Ramagopal, has given permission for the transfer of Y. Manohar, accused in the Sri Lakshmi murder case, to police custody for three days from Monday.

A petition filed by the north Circle-Inspector, D.V. Nageswara Rao, seeking permission to take Manohar into police custody the day he was produced in court for the first time was rejected by the Magistrate on the grounds that the police did not give a notice to the accused.

The Magistrate granted permission for the transfer of the accused to the police custody on Saturday after all formalities were completed.

Close call for students

VIZIANAGARAM: Twenty students of Trisul Ramana Public school here had a miraculous escape when the steering of the school bus in which they were travelling broke and the bus overturned near Poosapatirega mandal headquarters village on Saturday.

The bus was on way to the school. While 13 students received minor injuries, the others escaped unhurt, according to the Assistant Sub-Inspector, B. Trinadha Rao.

Farmer electrocuted

CUDDAPAH: A farmer, Avula Ramakrishnaiah (50), was electrocuted at Bakkannagaripalle village in Vempalle mandal last night. The mishap occurred when he came in contact with a live wire while watering his sunflower field. The farmer is survived by wife, a son and three daughters. In another incident, a beggar, Sunkalamma Pamuleti (6), sustained severe injuries following electric shock at Bhagatsingh Colony in Proddatur town on Saturday.

The boy was admitted to Proddatur Government hospital.

Last date extended

HYDERABAD: The last date for submission of applications for the post-graduate diploma courses in Travel and Tourism and Indian Management and Personality Development being run by Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University has been extended up to July 15 with a late fee of Rs. 100.

A press release said that the last date announced earlier was July 3 for both the self-financed courses that have been newly introduced.

Three naxals surrender

KARIMNAGAR: In a major setback to the People's War in Karimnagar east division, three naxalites, including a deputy commander and a woman, surrendered before the Kataram police on Saturday.

The Godavarikhani DSP, G. Vijay Kumar, said that the PW Kataram LGS deputy commander, B. Sammaiah alias Latchanna (35), a native of Kanakanuru village in Adavi Mutharam mandal, surrendered due to ill-health. He was also fed up with the organisation for not elevating him in the party. He was involved in several assaulting cases and other offences.

The other surrendered naxalite, D. Venkat Swamy alias Jangu (23), was the PW action committee member and native of Korlakunta village in Adavi mutharam village. He was involved in six offences, including the killing of local leaders.

The PW fifth platoon member, K. Padma alias Madhavi (19), who also surrendered, is a native of Palmela in Mahadevpur mandal.

Rain likely

VISAKHAPATNAM: Friday's low pressure area over west central Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood is moving north-westwards and lay over north-west and adjoining west central Bay off Orissa and north Andhra coast on Saturday afternoon.

According to a weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here, it is likely to become well-marked. Under its influence, rain or thundershowers are likely at many places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and at a few places over south coastal AP during the next 48 hours.

Heavy rain is also likely at one or two places over north coastal AP during the same period.

The chief amount of rainfall recorded in cm during the last 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday was Bapatla and Chodavaram, 3 each and Sattenapalli, 2.

SVU professors for Sweden meet

TIRUPATI: Prof. M.A. Hussain and Dr. B.V. Muralidhar of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, SV University, have been invited to participate in the 18th European International conference on `Modern South Asian Studies' to be held at Lund University, Lund, Sweden from July 6 to 9. The meet is being held under the aegis of the Swedish South Asian Studies Network (SASNET) and about 200 scholars are expected to participate in the four-day meet. Hussain would be presenting a paper on the subject, ''India's Secular Democracy: The Challenge of Communalism'' while Muralidhar would present his paper on "Gujarat Riots''.

School festival

CHITTOOR: The PCR High School Sesqui-Centennial celebrations would be held from July 5, according to Vasudevan, the chairman of old students association and vice-president Nutrin Confectioneries. The old students association will organise the 150 year celebrations through out the year in co-ordination with the high school and college authorities.

Houses gutted

CUDDAPAH: Four thatched houses of petty traders were gutted in Holmespet in Proddatur town on Saturday due to electrical short circuit. They were reduced to ashes before a fire tender could enter the narrow lane in which the houses were located. The Proddatur police registered a case.

MADANAPALLE: Computer training for members of the Velugu organisation held under the aegis of Institute for Electronic Governance (IEG) at Madanapalle and Angallu village concluded on July 3. About 32 participants from 20 mandals were trained in the six-day programme. The trainees will be placed in the eSeva centres proposed to be opened in the district. Union leader's

death condoled

TIRUPATI: Glowing tributes were paid to Y. Tarak Nath, General Secretary of the SBI Staff Union, Hyderabad Circle (SBISUHC), who died of a massive heart attack at Tirupati on June 20, while addressing a union meeting. Besides leaders belonging to the SBISUHC, trade union leaders representing AIBOC, AIBEA, AIIEA (LIC), CITU spoke at the condolence meeting held here today at the SBI Zonal Office. Speakers recalled the services of the departed leader to the SBI employees in particular and to the bank staff in general.

DIG takes charge

KURNOOL: The DIG of Police, A.B. Venkateswara Rao, took charge from the outgoing officer, Satyanarayan, here on Saturday. An officer of 1989 batch, Mr. Venkateswara Rao worked as Commissioner of Police at Vijayawada before taking up the new assignment here. Mr. Satyanarayan was transferred to intelligence wing at Hyderabad.

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara University College of Engineering has informed that the B.Tech (regular and FDH) classes for the academic year 2004-05 will begin on Monday.
