Welcome to Nirankari Baba

NEW DELHI JULY 3. A programme was organised in the Capital on Friday evening to welcome the spiritual head of the Sant Nirankari Mission, Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj, on his return from the world salvation tour after two months. A large number of devotees from Delhi, Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir attended the function. Sharing the experience of his visits to the U.K., the U.S. and Canada, the Baba said spiritual awakening was the remedy to reverse the wheel of human degradation.

Pulse polio drive today

NEW DELHI JULY 3 . The next phase of the Pulse Polio Immunisation programme for children below five years will be held in Delhi and in other parts of the country tomorrow (Sunday).

Spearheaded by Rotary International, WHO, UNICEF and CDC, the global polio eradication initiative is the largest public-private sector partnership.

A total of 4,000 polio booths have been set up in Delhi alone, of which nearly 125 will be mobile ones. Polio centres will also be set up at the entry points to Delhi like airports, railway stations, inter-State bus terminals and national highways.

Plea for internal trade ministry

NEW DELHI JULY 3 . The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), an apex body of the trading community, has in a memorandum to the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, demanded the formation of a separate Ministry of Internal Trade to look into the issues and problems of traders in the unorganised sector.

The CAIT secretary general, Praveen Khandelwal, said the Confederation has also demanded the formation of a high-power Trade Law Review Commission to review threadbare the more than 20 trade laws in the country.

The memorandum urged the Union Government to declare India a free trade zone.

The CAIT has also called for the formation of a Special Grievance Cell at Centre and State Government levels to deal with the day-to-day problems of traders.

Underpass opened

NEW DELHI JULY 3. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, inaugurated an underpass at Madhuban Chowk on Outer Ring Road today. The Member of Parliament, Sajjan Kumar, the Education and Tourism Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely, and the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Delhi Tourism, Ramesh Negi, were present on the occasion.

The total cost of the underpass constructed by the Delhi Tourism Department is Rs. 3,200 lakhs.

The underpass will provide a signal-free access to traffic on Outer Ring Road through the intersection with Road No.41 at Madhuban Chowk.

Scholarship date extended

NEW DELHI JULY 3 . The Fair & Lovely Foundation has extended the last date for receiving Project Saraswati scholarship applications till July 15. Application forms can be downloaded from www.hll.com.

Project Saraswati scholarships, which are for postgraduate studies in India, are granted to young women who have the aptitude, drive and ambition to achieve their goals, but are constrained due to their financial resources. The scholarships will be given on the basis of academic performance and a personal interview.
