A close look at peace proposal

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 3. Buddhist thinker, author and poet Daisaku Ikeda's current peace proposal, "Inner Transformation: Creating a Global Groundswell for Peace'', will form the basis of a seminar to be held at the International Peace Centre in Hauz Khas Enclave here this coming Wednesday.

The UNESCO Chair in Eco Technology and President of PUGWASH Conference on Science and World Affairs, M. S. Swaminathan, will deliver the keynote address. The other speakers include journalist and former Member of Parliament, Kuldip Nayar, and the Special Representative of the Centre for Jammu and Kashmir, N. N. Vohra.

Daisaku Ikeda had in his book "My Proposals'' stated that "world peace is not something that can be realised simply by politicians signing treaties, or by business leaders creating economic cooperation. True and lasting peace will be realised only by forging bonds of trust between people at the deepest level, in the depths of their very lives''.

A firm believer that all life is integrated and that personal interaction and dialogue are pivotal in establishing lasting peace, Dr. Ikeda has been issuing a peace proposal every year on January 26, the day Soka Gokkai International - an NGO he heads - was founded. The proposal is sent to Heads of State and individuals committed to the cause of peace in the global community and, going beyond merely diagnosing the problem, it responds to the prevailing scenario and offers practical and workable solutions.

This year's proposal, which would be discussed at the seminar, talks about "reviving a concrete and vivid awareness of the existence of others, developing the spirit of self-mastery''. Dr. Ikeda believes that "ultimately it is not something outside ourselves that must be de-clawed; the grand historic challenge of abolishing nuclear weapons begins with actions we initiate within ourselves''.
