Badminton
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, JULY 3. In the early phase of the main draw competition the contests have turned close and keen in the Krishna Khaitan Memorial all India junior badminton tournament at the Nehru indoor stadium on Saturday. Nothing signified the mood of the young talents better than the way qualifier Parin Chopra, a Thane lad wore down Gurusaidutt of Hyderabad in three well contested games in the under-16 category. The pint-sized Gurisaidutt looked in control to keep aloft Andhra's traditions in the sport. The high tossed returns and the feather-touch drop at the net showed the strong basics of the young lad but, for all this, his attitude against a fighter like Parin came for close scrutiny. Parin played with gay abandon and matched his opponent with his aggressive game. By the end stages both players at times went for full length dives on the wooden court but Gurusaidutt paid the price with a bleeding cut on his elbow. Perhaps that worked in his mind as Parin went on to win 15-7, 3-15, 15-9 in little over an hour.
