Madurai
By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI, JULY 3. The Ideal Home Exhibition, organised by the Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association, was inaugurated by P. Mohan, Member of Parliament, at the Tamukkam Grounds in the city on Friday. The expo has 250 stalls and separate `bays' that display an array of consumer goods. It has a `Delhi Bay' with 30 stalls carved as lifestyle pavilion exhibiting products manufactured in Delhi. Besides, the expo has 50 stalls put up by self-help groups from southern districts to market their products. The highlight of the expo is `Mrs. Madurai Contest' to be held on July 10 for two categories below 40 years and between 40 and 60 years. The MADITSSIA president, S. Aravind, said there was an urgent need to encourage new industries in the region to promote growth and create employment opportunities. He urged the Government to consider opening a Tidel Park here, as done in Chennai, since there were several small-scale software industries in and around Madurai. Since there were many engineering colleges in the region, a Tidel Park would also serve the employment needs. He also sought establishment of an energy park in the city for boosting the utilisation of non-conventional energy. Pointing out that a proposal for the energy park was almost cleared by the previous Government, he urged Mr. Mohan to ensured that the scheme was expedited by the officials in the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources. The MADITSSIA also called for formulation of an exclusive policy for the small-scale industries to bolster their growth. B. Muruganantham, chairman, Ideal Home Exhibition Committee, said the expo would be an ideal platform for small manufacturers and would serve as a buyer-seller meet. The exhibition would be open till July 12.
