Temperature

MADURAI, JULY 3. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26.8 degrees Celsius.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam today stood at 125.10 feet with a storage of 3640 mcft. The inflow was 375 cusecs with a discharge of 1625 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 46.13 feet with an inflow of 1124 cusecs and discharge was 1892 cusecs.

The Periyar dam received a rainfall of 7 mm followed by Tekkadi 4 mm.

Water released for irrigation has reached Kallandiri through the lined canal. Water discharged through the riverbed for recharging the drinking water infiltration wells reached Peranai.

Lovers commit suicide

A 20-year-old youth and a 15-year-old girl were found dead in a farm near Alanganallur this morning. They consumed poison.

According to the police, Chandrasekar, an agriculture labourer of Muduvarpatti, fell in love with his neighbour, Muthulakshmi. In a letter they had cited poverty as a reason for them to take the extreme step.

Two killed in accidents

Two persons were killed in different accidents in Madurai district today.

A cyclist, Arumugam (36), of Mahaganapathi Nagar near Samayanallur, was knocked down by a speeding lorry near Paravai. The lorry was going to Coimbatore from Tuticorin.

In the other accident, Parameswaran (22), who was riding a motorbike, was hit by a van on the Chekkanoorani-Tirumangalam Road. The deceased, working as a cashier in a private firm, was killed on the spot.
