Gold, silver seized from train parcel

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 3. The Vigilance Department of Northern Railway has seized a huge consignment of gold, silver, precious stones and cash worth Rs. 1.5 crores, which was booked on an Ahmedabad-bound train from Delhi. The accused, who had allegedly booked the consignment, has been handed over to the Delhi railway police.

According to a Northern Railway spokesperson, following an intelligence tip-off, a team of the Vigilance Department reached Old Delhi railway station and got a huge consignment, booked for Ahmedabad on Ashram Express, unloaded from the train around 2 p.m. All the packets of the huge consignment were opened in an exercise which went on for several hours and the personnel from the Railway Protection Force and Delhi railway police had to be deployed. The team recovered 610 kg of silver, 12 kg gold, a large number of precious stones - whose value is yet to be assessed - and Rs. 41 lakhs in cash. The total value of the seizure has been estimated to be Rs. 1.5 crores, though a final assessment will be made only after the value of the precious stones is ascertained.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment had been booked by one Jagdish Jadav, a resident of Ahmedabad. He used to operate from Sarai Rohilla in North Delhi. Jagdish has been handed over to the Delhi railway police and was remanded to two-day police custody.

A similar seizure was made following a tip-off from intelligence agencies in March. In that case too, the consignment was booked for Ahmedabad on Ashram Express. Gold, silver and lakhs of rupees were recovered from the parcels. In that case, one Jai Laxmi firm of Ahmedabad had booked the consignment.
