Letters to the Editor
Sir, Saddam Hussein roared in chains and the world heard. But the blood cry of thousands of his victims was choked. Of all the charges against him, the gassing of Kurds in Halabja in 1988 is the most serious. It is better to have a quick and open trial. And the verdict should serve as a lesson to any future dictator.
T. Prabhakara Rao,
Sir, Mr. Hussein may not be a saint. All the accusations against him might be true, but he did mouth a profound truth in the courtroom on Tuesday when he named the "real criminal."
Bernard Thangasamy,
Sir, There is no gainsaying that if Mr. Hussein is a criminal, so is Mr. Bush.
Ompal Singh Bhati,
Sir, The headline, "J'Accuse" (July 2), is not relevant in Mr. Hussein's case as he is not innocent as the Jewish artillery officer, Alfred Dreyfus, was. Saddam's crimes, including mass killings, are well known and they cannot be justified.
S. Nagaraja,
Sir, The headline took me down memory lane to 1948, when I saw the movie, The Life of Emile Zola, (MGM production 1937), with Paul Muni playing Zola. It was a brilliant portrayal of the great novelist and human rights champion. I vividly recall the scene in which Zola says to himself "Justice! Justice! The wheels of the train are crying for Justice" while returning to his hometown after defending Alfred Dreyfus.
K.S.S. Sarma,
