Uday, Ranjitha bag titles

BANGALORE, JULY 4. True to form, the top two paddlers of the State, Uday S. Athreya and V. Ranjitha bagged the men's and women' singles titles respectively in the State-ranking table tennis championship conducted here at the KSRTC community hall by the Bangalore Urban District TT Association.

The two carved their title triumphs in contrasting fashion. Uday prevailed over G. Ravishankar 11-7 , 11-5, 11-9, 5-11, 8-11, 6-11, 11-9 in an absoring men's final. Uday raced through the first three games and seemed poised for a sweep before Ravishnakar hit back.

Bringing forth all his experience, the wily Canara Bank player, who blocked and drove on his forehand with power, levelled the issue at three games all in a scintillating manner. This set a cliff-hanger decider. But with his rival leading 10-9, Ravishankar, going full stretch for a service return, tumbled and lost the point and match.

In contrast, V. Ranjitha wrapped up a facile 11-8, 11-8, 11-5, 11-4 victory over S. Bhavana of Mysore and Ranjitha, earlier won the junior girls' singles title beating Shamika Desai 11-13, 11-5, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8 and thus completed a double.
