The burnt chair of the Kollam district Youth Congress president lying outside the party's office.
KOLLAM, JULY 4 . The group rivalries in the district unit of the Youth Congress (YC) took a violent turn last night when a group of people barged into the YC district committee office at the DCC complex here and set ablaze the chair of the YC district president, P. Jermias. The inter-group and intra-group rivalries in the YC district unit came to the fore last week when a 19-member list of the YC district unit office-bearers was announced by the YC State president, K.P. Anil Kumar, with the approval of the party's national leadership. Both the `I' and `A' group supporters in the YC district unit had expressed their reservations against the list. The `I' group had six members in the panel. However, a section of the `I' group leaders issued a statement to the press alleging that those who had been selected as office-bearers from their own group had no qualification to occupy the posts and that those who qualified for the job had been ignored. Following this, a counter statement was issued by the same group, exposing the intra-group rivalry within the `I' group. The `I' faction in Kollam stands divided into the Rajmohan Unnithan faction and the K. Muraleedharan faction and this division is more prominent in the YC wing of the party. Within the `A' group of the YC also, there was discontent over the list. Mr. Jermias is from the `A' group. It is alleged that from the list he recommended, two names were deleted at the instance of two State-level Congress leaders of the `A' group and their nominees had been included. This had infuriated Mr. Jermias and his supporters. It is in this backdrop that the YC office was found vandalised this morning.
