By Our Special Correspondent GULBARGA, JULY 4. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Sunday launched the seventh round of the Pulse Polio programme in five districts of North Karnataka by administering polio drops to a young girl in the city. The Water Resources Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, and the Gulbarga MP, Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi, accompanied Mr. Dharam Singh. The Deputy Commissioner, Anjum Parvez, and the District Health Officer, Basavaraj Dhanappa, were present. The Government decided to launch a fresh round of the programme following reports of a new polio case in the Srikakulam region in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. Sources said that an intensive drive had been launched in Gulbarga, Raichur, Koppal, Bagalkot and Bellary districts in the State as a precautionary measure against the spread of the disease. The health workers and doctors administered polio drops to children at specially established centres in the five districts. Mobile centres were also established at bus stands, markets and railway stations. The sources said for the next three days teams of health workers and volunteers would visit houses in the five districts to cover the targeted children. In Gulbarga district, the district administration and the Health Department officials have constituted 2,170 teams to visit 6,00,463 houses in the district to cover 5,44,983 children aged up to five during the drive. Besides, 42 mobile teams have been constituted to cover transit population in bus stands, market places and railway stations. As many as 392 supervisors have been appointed to persuade people to permit health workers from administering polio drops to their children. The Chief Minister and the Water Resource Minister administered polio drops to children at the Iwan-e-Shahi Government Guest House complex. Sharanaprakash Patil, Narasimha Naik (MLAs), and the Chief Executive Officer of the Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat, Subodh Yadav, were present.
