`Tumkur bandh' called off

By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR, JULY 4. The Tumakuru Vishwavidyalaya Ulivigagi Horata Samiti, at its meeting here on Sunday, withdrew its call for a "Tumkur bandh" on Monday on the Tumkur University issue, following a promise made by the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, in Bangalore that the Government will let the university continue to function.

The President of the samiti, C.N. Narasimha Murthy, told The Hindu that Mr. Dharam Singh had also promised to provide the required funds for running the university. He would make efforts to provide a campus and infrastructure in phases to the university. "We are thankful to the Chief Minister,'' he said. Prof. Narasimha Murthy, however, said the decision to call off the agitation by the samiti was only temporary. The samiti would resume it if the Government did not withdraw the June 30 order and failed to fulfil the latest promises.

There were anxious moments before the samiti decided to call off the bandh. The samiti, which met in the afternoon, decided to go ahead with the agitation, as nothing was forthcoming from the Government. However, the samiti agreed to wait and adjourned the meeting to 7 p.m. The samiti decided to call off its decision on the bandh in the second meeting.
