By Our Staff Correspondent
BHOPAL, JULY 4 .The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti, wants to link the cultivation of medicinal flora and manufacturing of herbal drugs in the State to health tourism just as it has been done in Kerala. Ms. Bharti made this assertion at a workshop on export of herbal products and investment opportunities in their processing in the State capital on Saturday. She said that Madhya Pradesh was presently witnessing a revolution in cultivation of medicinal flora and manufacturing of herbal drugs. Linking this phenomenon with health tourism on the Kerala pattern would vastly improve the economic lot of farmers and generate employment on a large scale, she added. Referring to the export potential of agro products and herbs as well as investment opportunities in their processing, the Chief Minister said that different regions in Madhya Pradesh have abundant reserves of herbs like the Himalayan region. The Chief Minister appreciated the assistance being provided by the Central Medicinal Plants Board for cultivation of medicinal flora in Madhya Pradesh. She hoped that cultivation of medicinal flora and drug manufacturing would enable the State to find a place among the top five developed States in the country in the next three years. The State Forest Minister, Dhal Singh Bisen, informed the participants attending the workshop that about 2200 species of medicinal flora were found in Madhya Pradesh. He emphasised that the focus should be on the scientific cultivation of medicinal plants.
