HUBLI, JULY 5. Basavaraj Bommai, MLC and Janata Dal (U) leader, has urged the Union Minister of State for Non-Resident Affairs, Jagdish Tytler, to give priority to north Karnataka in attracting investment from non-resident Indians. Mr. Bommai, in a letter to the Minister, drew the latter's attention to the fact that development in Karnataka was Bangalore centric and there was an urgent need to decentralise economic growth. This would help prevent the influx of people to Bangalore, which was overburdened by the burgeoning population. On the other hand, north Karnataka remained underdeveloped and a feeling was growing that people had been deprived of job opportunities and infrastructural facilities. A committee headed by D.M. Nanjundappa had identified the huge gap in industrial growth between Bangalore and north Karnataka. Mr. Bommai said that NRI investment could be sought for the Belur Industrial Estate in Dharwad and for the Growth Centre in Raichur.
