Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JULY 5. Some 95 volunteers of the Pondicherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were arrested near Bharathi Park here today when they attempted to proceed towards the Assembly to stage a protest against outgoing Lt. Governor, N.N. Jha's, address to the House. The CPI (M) secretary, T. Murugan, was among those arrested. The volunteers tried to break the police cordon, but were stopped and taken away. The police denied they had caned the agitators. The party did not want Mr. Jha, who had already quit the post and whose resignation had since been accepted by the President, to address the House.
