Death penalty

Sir, — Criminals like Dhananjoy Chatterjee should be hanged without a second thought. If he is let off only with a life term, it will set a bad example. True, there may be no evidence that the death penalty has a deterrent effect. But at the same time we do not want people like Dhananjoy to live on the taxpayers' money.

Subhobrata Basu,
Kolkata

Sir, — Whatever the degree of crime, the criminal should be punished but not on the same scale. Taking away a life is unjustifiable, because no one can give life to a person. Solitary confinement and life imprisonment are worse than hanging a person.

Kolar, Karnataka
