Reservation row

Sir, — Those who oppose caste-based reservation favour income-based quotas. As an attempt to strike a balance, why not consider reservation reflecting both the factors? Caste may still be the primary condition for reservation benefits provided the person who seeks the benefits has an income below a predetermined cap.

Akashi, Japan

Sir, — As a Civil Engineer, I worked with many construction workers belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. After 40 years, I find that their children and grand children continue to toil as labourers.

In spite of various incentives, due to acute poverty, only a very few among their families can come up to the college level and most of them do not have access to information on job opportunities. Even if they apply for a post under reservation, they do not get it because invariably it is cornered by the children of the well-to-do in the communities.

V.R. Sundaram,
Chennai
