Letters to the Editor
Sir, Marlon Brando was the best actor of his generation. Entering Hollywood at a time when powerful acting was seen by other actors as nothing more than melodramatic portrayals, and varying modes of dialogue delivery were thought to be sufficient to effect characterisations, Brando ushered in a whiff of fresh air by adopting the then new "Method acting technique." He was the first in Hollywood to define, adopt and popularise this technique where the actor should live the character on screen. This was why Brando's portrayals were much more powerful, intense and real. And this was why the `mumblings' of Brando only added more realism to his portrayals. He was an inspiration to many famous younger actors such as Robert De Niro, Sean Penn and Johnny Depp. A true genius in his own right, he was also the most vociferous supporter in Hollywood of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, the native Indian rights movements in the 1970s and the anti-apartheid movements in the 1980s.The world will miss not only Brando the actor but also Brando the human being
