`Bandh' at Sivakasi
SIVAKASI JULY 5. Most of the commercial establishments, including printing units, match units and fireworks factories, remained closed in the town following a `bandh' call today. The Federation of Trade and Commerce Associations had called for the one-day strike to protest against the Sivakasi Municipal authorities' attempt to demolish an arch constructed near the Mariamman temple on P.K.S. Arumuganadar road. A few educational institutions also participated in the bandh. Over 2,000 persons, led by Vairaprakasam, president of the temple `tiruppani' committee, took out a procession from the temple to the office of the Revenue District Officer, where they raised slogans against the municipal authorities. The officials of the local body contended that the arch, encroaching upon the road, was posing a hindrance to the public.
White chemical seized, 2 held
ERODE JULY 5. The Food Cell CID police today seized nafta (white chemical) from a godown near here. According to the police, information was received that some persons were keeping white chemical, meant for use in textile printing, screen printing, for sale without any licence. The police raided the godown at Vettukattuvalasu and seized about 20 barrels of white chemical worth Rs. 3 lakhs. The owner, Murugesan of Teacher's Colony, Erode, and a salesman, Senthil, were arrested.
Arrested students in custody
Thanjavur July 5. Two students Siva Priyan and Subhadheetharan who were arrested by the police here yesterday in connection with a bomb explosion at Karanthai near here on Saturday were produced in court today and remanded to custody.
CellOne scheme extended
CHENNAI JULY 5. The Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has extended a promotional scheme offered for its pre-paid CellOne customers, wherein the talk value for the recharge coupons of Rs. 300 and Rs. 500 was Rs. 200 and Rs. 400. The offer, which ended on June 30, has been extended for three months with effect from July 1. The copy of the bills of post-paid CellOne connections can be downloaded from the web site www.bsnl.co.in by giving the account number and cellphone number. These bills can be presented to any of the collection centres for payment, says an official release.
Rs. 6.32 lakhs given to students
CHENNAI JULY 5. The Chief Minister and All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary, Jayalalithaa, today released Rs. 6.32 lakhs from the `Puratchithalaivar MGR Trust' to 13 poor students, to enable them continue their professional courses. A party release said the assistance was handed over to the beneficiaries at a function held at the Chief Minister's residence here. One of the beneficiaries, Chitra, daughter of a loadman, who scored 1,152 marks in Plus-Two examinations and got a seat in the Chengalpattu Medical College, was given Rs. 1 lakh. Another top scorer, E. Selvanathan, a resident of Periyapatti in Salem district, secured 1,162 marks. His father is a farm worker. The candidate, who got a seat in the Madras Medical College, has been given Rs. 1,16,110. Ms. Jayalalithaa, who disbursed funds from the Trust for six candidates during the first two years of engineering or medical courses, had extended assistance to the tune of Rs. 2,38,605 for the third year. She disbursed Rs. 1,77,686 to five candidates to meet the expenditure on the second year studies of the professional courses, the release said.
Programme on radioisotopes
CHENNAI JULY 5. Anna University and the National Association for Applications of Radioisotopes and Radiation in Industry, India Nuclear Society, Kalpakkam branch, and the Qunest Foundation is organising a four-day awareness programme from July 13. According to E. Balagurusamy, Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, about 20 reputed scientists from the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Anna University, medical colleges, hospitals and other organisations in the country have been invited to deliver special lectures. The programme is open to faculty and students of engineering, science, and medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, scientists and members of the public and non-governmental organisations. Music and dance festival
CHENNAI JULY 5. The 62nd annual festival of music and dance, organised by Sri Thyagaraja Festival Committee, will begin in Tirupati on July 22. On the occasion, the committee's Saptagiri Sangeetha Vidwanmani award will be conferred on the Hyderabad sisters. This year's festival will have an unique feature as about 20 twin sisters, and teams of brothers and mother and daughter combinations would perform. According to a committee release, industrialist P. Obul Reddy will inaugurate the festival.
Nine nabbed
Nagercoil July 5. Nine persons were arrested at separate places for manufacturing and selling arishtam (country liquor) on Sunday. According to the police, as directed by the Superintendent of Police, M. Ramasubramani, a special team was formed to prevent the sale of arishtam in different parts of the district. On information, the team conducted a surprise raid at Anjugramam near Kanyakumari and arrested Natarajan of Pudukudiyiruppu, Selvam of Kanakappapuram, Jegan and Naser of Azakappapuram for selling arishtam. The team also conducted a surprise raid at Vadiveeswaram near Nagercoil and arrested Kannan, Thankarasu, Ayyathurai, Somu and Vijayan of Vadiveeswaram for manufacturing arishtam even though revenue officials had already sealed the factory. The team destroyed 5,000 litres of aristam.
Four arrested
DINDIGUL JULY 5. The highways patrol police today arrested four persons on a charge of transporting adulterated petrol to Dindigul from Erode during a surprise vehicle check on the Dindigul-Palani main road near Thandikombu. Rajendran, his wife Vasantha, a van driver, Thambusamy, and a cleaner Sundaram were arrested. About 3000 litres of petrol worth Rs.1.20 lakhs and cash Rs.82,000 were seized. The police said Rajendran and Vasantha had been selling adulterated petrol at Idayakottai, Kallimandhayam and Dharmathupatti.
House burgled
Nagercoil July 5. A hunt is on for some unidentified persons who burgled the house of a CSI church priest here on Sunday. According to the police, when Finos Ainos went to the church at Ramanthurai, the culprits entered the house through the back yard and decamped with five sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs.6,000 in cash.
Power cut
THENI JULY 5. There will be no power supply in the following areas between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday owing to maintenance work to be carried out at the Vannathiparai sub-station: Goodalur, Angoorpalayam, Kullappagoundenpatti, Karunakkamuthampatti, Surulipatti, Narayanathevanpatti, Lower camp, Upper Manalar, Lower Manalar and nearby areas.
Killed
SALEM JULY 5. A school student was crushed to death when a Government city bus hit her near Gorimedu here today. Police said the mishap occurred when Sasikala, daughter of Chinnaponnu and a Class V student, was waiting at the bus stop this morning. The bus, which was on reverse gear, knocked her down. A seriously injured Sasikala was rushed to the Government hospital where she died.
